Tap Gallery, Sydney

Last night saw the opening of the Inter-Medium show at the Tap Gallery in Sydney. The exhibition features sculpture, painting and photography and is on from August 30th until September 6th at Cnr Burton & Sherbrooke Streets, Darlinghurst.

Amongst those exhibiting are some old friends, Andrew May, Franka Zaumseil, Jo Fedora, Sylvia Baxter, Rebecca Donald, and Pascale Baud as well as many others. I also have a small series of TTV’s I took at the Geebung Polo Club re-enactment in the High Country earlier this year in the show.

Its good to see yet another literary prize recognising the work of translators. And even better to note that an australian has been shortlisted for this year’s award. David Colmer, now living in Amsterdam, has been shortlisted for the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize 2009 and deservedly so.

David translated The Twin by Gerbrand Bakker (originally published by Cossee in Amsterdam as Boven is het Stil) and published in Australia by Scribe. Having read both the original, (and if you can read Dutch I’d recommend you do that) and the translation, I’m in awe of the fantastic job David has done with what was already an outstanding work. Congratulations also to Scribe who are one of the very few independent publishers supporting the work of translators.

The Shortlist for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award has been announced. Its a refreshing and I find, inspiring shortlist this year. The final eight also include two translated works.

My translation of Ariella Kornmehl’s The butterfly month didn’t make the shortlist  but then neither did Coetzee, Llosa, Ondaatje, Lessing, McEwan, Rankin, Winterson….  the list goes on! I’m more than happy with the company I’m in on the IMPAC longlist.

Local and or general

A public artwork by artist Louise Lavarack will be installed in Sparta Place, Brunswick. Titled New Order, the work is a contemporary take on the classic Greek column.

Five freestanding columns in the elegant Ionic style will be placed along Sparta Place. At close quarters you will discover that New Order is made from hundreds of recycled domestic objects – kettles, toasters, teapots, saucepans, mixing bowls, coffee pots, etc. And some of these objects could be from your home!

For this work the artist needs a variety of household objects made of metal and no more than 30cm.

You can donate things that are:

  • aluminium
  • stainless steel
  • chromed steel, or
  • other metal, and
  • smaller than than 30cm.

Contributions can be made and you can meet the artist on 2 May at Sparta Place, 459 Sydney Road, Brunswick midday to 3 pm.

On the weekend I went down to the Counihan to pick up my entry for the Women’s Salon 2009, Laneways and Dreams #1, only to discover that someone wants to buy it.

Laneways and dreams #1

This is great news. Timely too. Not only is it lovely to know someone else likes it as much as I do but it will pay for the repairs needed on my camera.

The Catalogue

The Women’s Salon 09 at the Counihan Gallery in Brunswick is on for almost another week (until March 15th) for anyone who is hoping to still get in and check it out. There is some very interesting work included, not least of all Nicole Polentas’ amazing brooch, My Black Knight.

I was also especially chuffed to see that my photo was one of only a handful of works to be chosen for the exhibition catalogue. ;-)
